History of Witcher, WV
Witcher is a small unincorporated community in eastern Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The community was named after the Witcher family, who were early settlers in the area. Witcher is located near the community of Belle and is approximately 10 miles southeast of the city of Charleston.
Witcher was originally founded as a coal mining community in the early 20th century. The area was home to several coal mines, including the Witcher Coal Company, which operated from the early 1900s until the mid-1950s. The coal mines in the area provided employment for many local residents, and Witcher grew as a result. In addition to coal mining, Witcher was also home to a thriving lumber industry. The area's abundant forests provided an important source of timber, and several sawmills were established in the community. Today, Witcher is primarily a residential community, with many of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The community is known for its quiet, rural atmosphere and its beautiful natural surroundings. The nearby Kanawha River offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. In recent years, Witcher and the surrounding area have experienced some economic challenges, as the decline of the coal industry and other factors have led to job losses and population decline. However, the community remains a proud and resilient part of West Virginia's history and culture. |
