Westmoreland Baptist Church is affiliated with the Greater Huntington Baptist Association, the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists and the Southern Baptist Convention. We regularly support International and North American Missions through proportional giving to the SBC Cooperative Program.

Purpose Statement

“Be on MISSION for the Lord through EVANGELISM, Bring people to MEMBERSHIP in the Local Church through BAPTISM, Develop them to MATURITY through DISCIPLESHIP, Lead them to MAGNIFY God Through WORSHIP,
and Involve them in MINISTRY through LOVING and SERVING others.”

Westmoreland Baptist Church began as a mission of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church (Now the Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church) in 1915. A one room structure was built to house the congregation in 1918, and the mission officially constituted as Westmoreland Baptist Church in 1924 and called Ray Scott as the first pastor of the church.

The mission was initially affiliated with the American Baptist Convention but in 1942 began using Sunday School Literature produced by the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1948 the church affiliated with the Greenup Association of Baptist Churches (in the Kentucky Baptist Convention) thereby officially becoming the first Southern Baptist Church in the state of West Virginia. It became a charter member of the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists when that group was organized in 1970.

The present sanctuary was dedicated in 1955 and was refurbished in 1977, and again in 2004. Ground was broken for the two story educational building in 1961 and a new building housing a gymnasium, modern kitchen, and pre school department was completed and dedicated in 1991.

The following Mission Chapels have been sponsored by Westmoreland Baptist Church:
